746 - Ryder Cup Pairings Preview

With our resident Euro supporters in transit home from the Solheim Cup we call up Shane Ryan for a thoroughly biased American preview of the 2023 Ryder Cup which (finally) begins this week in Rome. We take a final look at the course and some recent setup changes, the American's approach to the event, our picks for MVP and LVP plus some other predictions and a few listener questions as well.

Randy, TC, Neil and Cody break down their expedition to Finca Cortesin—and the Europe fans are as brazen as ever! The choir of “olés” (Randy and Tron) highlights their big-time…win???

Yeah, the win/tie/retain thing is confusing, so the guys unpack it.


(5:30) Team Europe retains the Solheim Cup at Finca Cortesin, 14-14, and the craziest part of it all is not the fact that one more half point would have made it Team USA’s – but the fact that for the first time in Solheim Cup history, Europe has “won” three straight times! Two epic back-to-back birdies from Carlota Ciganda after a shank on 15 made it theirs. Even the King, Felipe VI, pulled up to see his fellow Spaniard.

 the European media call out the disgusting display of rushing the green?! The guys go a little bit into the spectator experience and how intimate, yet disjointed it felt – and how poorly communicated that was in the broadcast.

(25:00) The guys take a deep dive into the matches.


Leona Maguire seized the first point, 4 and 3, while Rose Zhang ended her week with a disappointing Solheim Cup debut.

Megan Khang claimed the first singles point for Team USA in a highlight reel of a match against Linn Grant.

Danielle Kang capped off an inspired week with a victory against Charley Hull, 4 and 2.

Anna Nordqvist knocked out Jennifer Kupcho, 2 and 1.

Lilia Vu took care of Madelene Sagstrom, 4 and 3. Angel Yin took down Celine Boutier, 2 and 1 – which was a big turning point for the United States. (Shoutout to Angel for 

Cheyenne Knight proved herself an incredible captain’s pick and turned her match around down the stretch against Gemma Dryburgh to get a half point.

An electric performance from Caroline Hedwall. After sitting most of the sessions, she put another point on the board for Team Europe after flipping her match and beating Ally Ewing.

The elusive (in terms of broadcast) Maja Stark versus Allisen Corpuz match resulted in Maja holding steady, 2 and 1. It draws a Max Homa comparison from TC. And Baby Shark chants?

Tied up, 13-13, it all comes down to this next match: Carlota Ciganda vs. Nelly Korda. How did it all come together for Carlota and fall apart for Nelly? 

 she have that dawg in her? Time for the O/U major assessment from Neil. Also, a 4-0 week for Carlota!

The anchor match wrapped up a great performance for Lexi Thompson, beating Emily Pederson, 2 and 1, but wasn’t enough to get it done for Team USA.


(1:21:16) Finally, the guys share their nominations for Solheim Cup MVP and LVP. How much of a letdown is this for Team USA, after an opening session sweep? Should Stacy Lewis have gone full send on having players play every single match?

How much did the Team USA data-focused approach help? The Team Europe nutritionist? Let’s assess the jobs done by both Stacy Lewis and Suzann Pettersen.

(1:36:00) Right after the ad read, the guys remark on the lack of information on equipment! But let’s consider the media turnout for a moment – the guys point out there was a bigger showing of American media for the Solheim Cup than the AIG Women’s Open. That may or may not have something to do with the Ryder Cup.


(1:40:00) Hamsterdam time! Chef TC leads a full-blown roast of the venue and broadcast. The spectator experience was a logistical nightmare (running out of food and water!), and the broadcast left out so much context. Why don’t we NFL Redzone quad box this – especially on Sunday singles?

Cody engaged in some investigative reporting on the sponsorship front – sounds like Aramco is percolating re: Solheim Cup!

(1:58:00) Cody then tears into the lack of support the women’s game has had. Then the guys tip their hats to the good golf and how much they love the event.


(1:47:00) Indeed, Randy, it should not be so difficult to try to be a fan of something. A biennial event that platforms the women’s game in a way it seldom sees deserves a better production treatment – not late updates, missed shots, no yardages/club context. It’s especially discouraging when the golf is exceptional. The women are performing – and the entire product needs to act in unison, not just provide lip service.

I don’t feel the need to award anyone the worst take, other than the fact that I know the Team Europe peeps are feeling really high off this “win” but the revenge game will be so, so, sweet. We unearthed a few killers from this Team USA group who seem super moved by team competition – Lexi and DK – and the momentum should easily translate in a back-to-back year. I like the culture this Team USA is forming and hope more of that is solidified next year.

Randy and Cody are on location in Spain as we close in on the start of the 2023 Solheim Cup matches which begin on Friday morning. For our preview episode we bring in Sophie Walker - former LET player and current broadcaster for Sky Sports Golf - to preview our favorite holes at Finca Cortesin, the potential parings and matchups, plus our predictions for the final score, top point scorers for each side, and more.

740 - Solheim Cup Preview with Sophie Walker

 Your guy Sahith, my guy Sahith, everyone’s guy Sahith? Soly is joined by the VP of the Sahith club Tron, whose truce is amplified by ALL of their guys having great weeks – but Sahith Theegala’s win at the Fortinet Championship headlines them all, where he was negative strokes gained off the tee all week?! Despite challenges from country music sensation Eric Cole, stinky Cam Davis and S.H. Kim, Theegala assembled a three-shot win for his first PGA Tour title – and didn’t even have to griddy his way to winning the Fortnite–I mean Fortinet Championship.

(3:00) Silverado Resort and Spa, while probably not the most enticing golf course, certainly produces a fun week of golf. Soly argues that forcing some creativity off of legitimate par 5s was far more interesting than what we saw during the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Also, can we protect Muralidhar Theegala at all costs? He might be headed into Blockie territory. Deserves a watchful eye.

(9:00) How weird is the fall series? Weird. Time to clarify what exactly it means, including some of the new changes introduced for this fall. Players like Jimmy Walker are airing their grievances…but is it valid?


(22:30) Abandoning the wash, rinse, repeat formula of the wraparound schedule is adding some intrigue – and the guys agree that for the first time, we might actually feel refreshed for some golf heading into the new year. Meaningful movement and new storylines by way of the guys outside the top 50 could make for a nice innovation, and some different names when the big-time events roll around.


(26:00) Moving onto the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour, where some Team Europe Ryder Cup faves are keeping their games fresh – and in contention! Rahm, Hovland, Fleetwood, Rory and Ludvig all finished in the top 10, but it was Ryan Fox who took the one-shot victory at Wentworth Club.

Soly is at his wit’s end with Tyrell Hatton’s complaints, DJ Khaled is Team Europe? And some speculation on everyone’s Marco Simone prep.

(47:20) Getting into some other items, including Stewart Hagestad winning his third U.S. Mid-Am title at Sleepy Hollow. Soly debates whether it’s fair for Mid-Am championships to be filled with reinstated pros.

(50:42) Grayson Murray wins for the second time this year at the Simmons Bank Open on the Korn Ferry Tour.

 (21:30) KVV asked to hop in and pinch hit on this category, handing this week’s award to TC after he repeatedly referred to Troy Merritt as “The Pastor.” We can’t give TC a pass just because he only watches cooking shows; as any prestige television junkie knows, Neil nicknamed Merritt “The Prophet” not The Pastor after noticing his striking resemblance to a nefarious character in the HBO limited series “Station Eleven.” We rely on TC for many things — wine recommendations, travel tips, testing out experimental putting grips — but we’re gonna need him to acknowledge the L here. He is sentenced to watch all three seasons of The Righteous Gemstones as penance.

Ahead of her Solheim Cup debut in Spain next week, Cheyenne Knight sits down with Randy to talk about her selection to the team as well as her amateur and collegiate career at Alabama, her initial struggles in professional golf, the distance and technology debate from an LPGA perspective, and more.

738 - Cheyenne Knight 

Soly and TC are joined by Randy in his mom’s basement, who spent his week at the LPGA Kroger Queen City Championship. Soly and TC publicly address 

(4:50) Another week without the PGA Tour but, the golf continues on! The guys recap Vincent Norrman’s victory at the Horizon Irish Open, where he vaulted himself with a 7-under 65 final round to claim a one-shot victory for his second victory in three months. Not a bad month for Florida State, TC acknowledges.

There was another close call to start Rory’s Sunday…but he felt like swimming after hitting four shots into the water. The nail in the coffin? He was three back by 16 and tripled that hole.

That said, there should be more of a concerted effort to assemble and market the coffee golf product. Whatever happened to the Rolex series? TC demands this should be at an interesting links course. The guys wrap up the conversation with a few more Irish Open-adjacent gaffes, including a Hamsterdam from Soly.

(12:30) A look at Randy’s week from the grounds of Kenwood Country Club, who is happy to report he spectated some proper golf – and some of that thanks to the sheer fact that Kenwood Country Club is days away from a renovation, and let itself 

The Minjee Lee vs. Charley Hull duel proved itself to be one of the most exciting moments of the LPGA season – including Charley’s nearly playoff-winning putt, which was a few yards off the green post-TIO that landed just a centimeter short of the cup. Minjee ended up winning on the second hole, after an incredible wedge from the rough that landed just a few feet for birdie.

With the Solheim Cup less than two weeks away, Randy dishes some takeaways. To the surprise of few, he has still not migrated away from Team Europe – but gives Team US its proper due.

(25:50) More insights from Randy’s week home in Cincinnati. Randy’s family hosted Madalene Sagstrom and her caddie, Shane. Randy’s mom attempts to make the two feel at home by displaying their respective flags of Sweden and Ireland…only to mistakenly display Argentinian and Italian flags. All tough first impressions aside, Randy’s family had a blast hosting.

A few more on-course kudos from Randy, including Alexa Pano and Yealimi Noh. There was a contentious LPGA meeting, spearheaded by the leadership putting out a proposal to award four LPGA cards to the top LET finishers who do not have LPGA membership 

 which rubbed some players the wrong way. A formal merger is also under consideration, but the PIF’s role could increase in tandem, as well. Is there a communication breakdown between the commissioner and the players?

(38:00) More Ryder Cup chat, feat. accusations of the non-golf grass 

 fashion faux pas from Team USA, and some missing faces from a trip abroad. Is there some friction on Team USA? There were some randos in the team room. Makes you think if there’s a Blockie activation on the way, TC speculates. Justin Thomas gets a putting lesson from Steve Stricker?

Is Marco Simone setting up to be extremely underwhelming? It’s so hard to accurately pinpoint what this Ryder Cup is meant to test.

(48:00) Let’s get into the guys’ golf games. TC and Soly dive into their experience with his new Titleist T-series irons. Randy learns he didn’t need to stray away from the T-100s.

(53:00) Can’t end a Sunday recap pod without some PGA Tour chatter – TC reports that there are some rumblings that the folks in Ponte Vedra might be shopping their private equity options if the PIF deal falls through. At this point, the guys are mostly rooting for the best path back to good competitive golf – and this might be it.

737 - Irish Open and LPGA Cincinnati Recaps 

Big Randy is on location at this week's LPGA Kroger Queen City Championship in Cincinnati. Ahead of the tournament, he catches up with Angel Yin to talk about her road back from a difficult patch in her career, learning to coach herself and own her swing, her close calls at notching her first win during the 2023 season and the upcoming Solheim Cup matches in Spain.

Each of the twelve-man teams are set for Marco Simone - time for another Ryder Cup roundtable with Soly and Kyle Porter vs. Tron and Jamie Weir. We begin with Soly and Tron trading haymakers on Ludvig's inclusion on the European team and their respective histories of opinions on the Swedish Ryder Cup rookie. After the Ludvig shouting match concludes (28:00), we settle down for some additional thoughts on the makeup of the rosters, those who were considered and not selected, potential pairings and a ton more.

735 - Ryder Cup Roundtable post Captains Picks

It's time for another deep dive from Soly and KVV - this time we look back at the last four Ryder Cups on European soil. From the blowout win at the K Club in 2006 to Le Golf National in 2018, we examine every detail in each of the home European victories from the most memorable moments to the many shortcomings from the Americans, the controversies, the fashion.... or lack thereof, and a ton more. Settle in for this one!

734 - Last Four European Ryder Cups 

 to talk with Soly about swing mechanics and how intricate and varied the golf swing can be, his work coaching players of all skill levels, working with Matt Wolff through his recent struggles, how he observes his players from TV coverage, his own aspirations of playing competitively and more.

(2:15) Soly is in great spirits as he’s joined by KVV, Neil and Cody to digest the season finale. BDV is back for the second week in a row as in claiming the PGA Tour season finale. Viktor Hovland won the Tour Championship by five shots over Xander Schauffele at East Lake and took home a nice chunk of change ($18M, to be exact).

(4:20) That said, it’s hard to shake off the LIV vibe of this event. Probably the only place in the world where $18M is super anticlimactic. Now that the money talk isn’t so taboo, nothing about it is all that sexy! Neil suggests a live update of the money on the line. Why can’t we make this match play again…? This format needs to figure itself out.


(9:30) Shouts to the broadcast for going commercial-free on the back nine and letting the good golf between the final pairing take the stage. It’s been a refreshing playoffs presentation from CBS, with some great chemistry between Immelman and Nantz. The real hero of the Tour Championship, however, is the cameraman that ran with Hovland after the rain delay. Neil learns the difference between a hard and a soft camera.

(13:00) Let’s recap the final round a little bit more – Viktor Hovland gets a processional on the first tee? They both went 4-under in their first six holes, with Xander birdied 8 to cut the lead to 5. Both missed short birdie on 10 and are subsequently put on the clock? We’re talking big bucks here, no one is scared!

Xander birdied the next two holes to cut the lead to three, but Hovland stays afloat, continuing to par his way through the back nine before birdies on the last three holes. Xander birdied the last and shot an impressive 62. 

(14:00) Time to play the O/U majors game starring Hovland. Setting the line at 2.5, the guys prognosticate the “cutie pie”’s chances.


(17:00) KVV raises a question—when is the last time we saw someone take an abysmal part of their golf game and turn it around in a matter of one year? Cody offers some background on the team Viktor’s has built around him, which includes a huge indulgence of stats.

(23:30) Let’s unpack 2023 for some of these big hitters who didn’t quite hit big. Why isn’t Xander better? Soly contests with Xander’s strokes gained, and Xander’s made an unreal amount of money at East Lake, but what exactly can we make of his career? He’s got all the goods – but seemingly lacks a killer instinct.

Has the world no. 1 figured out his putting woes? There were so many almosts this year with Scottie Scheffler this year. Is it time to worry about his putting re: Ryder Cup? Yeah, it is.

(41:50) The gamblers are furious – when is the Tour going to implement injury reports? We didn’t find out until Thursday that Rory hadn’t played a single hole of golf all week due to his injury. Not exactly fair to accept gambling money if there’s a lack of transparency on a player’s health.

(49:30) Monahan is booed in Atlanta! Is a match play season-ending event a tough sell for sponsors? The guys devise what a made-for-TV spectacle could be…without being “The Match.” Isolating the field to a handful of players might not be the answer, but how else can a bracket operate?

(58:50) Let’s start our Ryder Cup segment with a brief DP World Tour moment. Todd Clements won the Czech Masters by a shot over Matt Wallace. Some big finishes from Nicolai Hojgaard, Bob MacIntyre, Ludvig Aberg and Yannick Paul. Team Europe captain Luke Donald will make his captain’s picks on September 4th.


Time to dive in! Does Keegan deserve it? Even if he isn’t in the “cool kids” club? What do we make of his play + chemistry? Keegan’s team matchplay record is nothing to sniff at: 6-2-1. Cody argues Keegan is on the rebound – and that he’s deserving! Rickie, Cam Young, Spieth?

Which pairings are the right ones? Maybe the Europeans have the edge, but it seems like it’s marginal. Who will be the dark horse star of this Ryder Cup?


(1:33:00) The guys digested Jin Young Ko vs. Megan Khang in real-time, but Megan Khang prevails after one playoff hole for her first LPGA victory. Khang lost her final-round lead and Jin Young Ko rose to the challenge and nearly won it all before Khang birdied the final hole to send them into a playoff. The Solheim Cup solidifies.

(1:37:30) Other items, including the Walker Cup, the Korn Ferry Tour and the Alejandro Tosti tea! Putting a bow on the end of the PGA Tour season.

(41:50) The lack of injury reports was a weird thing for me to get into when I first started consuming golf on TV. Like, I really have to find out through a WD most of the time? I’m all for thickening the plot – and talking about injuries does that! We could have all had a collective sob fest leading up to the Tour Championship re: Rory. Also, the gambling community is not the best bunch to rile up. Everyone vouched for this, so everyone wins best take.

KVV, Neil: Not everyone has to be a major winning king. It’s ok if people like Xander are simply just mid in legacy? In sports, we have to detach technical greatness from win capability – and in a sad, strange way, that’s kind of beautiful. And memorable! Ask Dan Marino. Or Charles Barkley.

732 - Tour Championship Recap

Big Randy and Cody are back with another LPGA-focused pod which kicks off with a review of Alexa Pano's first professional win at the co-sanctioned ISPS Handa World Invitational event in Northern Ireland.

Then it's on to the upcoming Solheim Cup matches in Spain which are just inside of a month away (34:00). We recorded shortly after European captain Suzann Pettersen announced her captain's picks. We debrief on the European team before moving on to the Americans and the upcoming decisions facing captain Stacy Lewis. We close with some hypothetical head-to-head matchups based on the Rolex rankings.

731 - LPGA Check-In and Look Ahead to Solheim Cup 

With just a little more than a month to go our foursome of Ryder Cup sickos are back to trade barbs ahead of the action at Marco Simone. For the stars and stripes, Soly pairs with Kyle Porter while the Euros are represented by Tron and Jamie Weir. We take the temperature of both sides and potential captain's picks, venue and setup concerns, the path to victory for each side, the shortcomings of the points systems, underrated players on both teams, and a ton more.

730 - Ryder Cup Roundtable with Jamie Weir and Kyle Porter 

The king of the live shows is BACK. Soly makes his return (congrats to both Soly and Hannah!!), boasting at epic proportions as his pick for the week got it done, 

 D.J. and TC report from D.J.’s garage after a week spent at the BMW Championship, and Cody misses out on his Mid-Am qualifier to hold down the fort as the guys digest the second week of the newly formatted FedExCup Playoffs.

(3:30) Viktor Hovland shoots a 61 for a course record-setting victory at Olympia Fields, breaking free from a tie with Scottie Scheffler with a clutch birdie on the 18th. Hovland shot a 28 on his back nine to rocket up the leaderboard on a day that appeared to be Scheffler’s for the taking. It’s Hovland’s second victory of the year in what’s been a career year for the 25-year-old – he hasn’t missed a cut this year!

(16:30) Olympia Fields is a venue that once again rose to the occasion. Thick rough, enough variance and deceptive greens. TC and DJ dig into their on-site experience, including TC’s pro-am and some insight on the Evans Scholar program.

(24:00) Soly steals TC’s thunder and leads down the leaderboard, which includes some wholesome Max Homa moments with the crew and Saturday’s unruly spectator. Why are we letting an actual piece of string be the separation between 

(33:00) Sahith Theegala just missing the Tour Championship spurs a conversation of notables to miss (Denny McCarthy, Cameron Young, Sam Burns-ing his Ryder Cup chances?) Were they deserved?

(37:00) Soly does his best to contain TC’s desire to go all the way down the leaderboard but eventually surrenders. TC won’t admit to ever calling Tom Kim a fraud (deflects to “thirsty”), but witnesses and receipts say otherwise.

(40:00) Is Lucas Glover going to get a captain’s pick? Soly is manically dying on the JT Ryder Cup hill! Contends that the “American Poulter” needs to be on the team. Brooks Koepka, Cameron Young, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa and Rickie Fowler seem set. So who is getting the last? Let’s play the culture fit game, which is mostly Soly declaring JT the only option.
